Estoril Sol Residential Complex

In the place where now is the Estoril Sol Residential Complex existed a former Hotel, that constituted a barrier between the hill and the Palmela Park, located North, and the marginal avenue and the access to the beach to the South. The set of the new buildings looks for a scenographic character and, simultaneously, the scale of Land Art through reformulating the relation between figure and background, and giving prominence to the place, understood in a dialoguing dimension between the landscape, the architectonic and the urban components.

The design rehearses the solution of several problems identified in the territory. There was a confrontation between scales in the surrounding area which compelled the new building to exhibit a self-referential character with roots on the Russian Constructivism architecture. With the demolition of the old Hotel, it rendered visible an altimetric difference of 30 meters between the hill of the Castelhana and the marginal avenue, but, for the first time in decades, the Palmela Park became visible from this avenue. This obeyed to design a gradual transition between the high level and the low level of the marginal avenue, creating a basement platform where the new set of buildings rests.

The emergent volumes are implanted according to a play alternating built volumes with voids in order to discover the green of the park and of the hill behind them. Starting from a rule of three regular bodies with square and identical plans, separated by similar distances, the volumes rise in two sets rotated according to the two main directions, the one given by the line of the Castelhana valley and reinforced by the line of the river, and the other given by the coastline.

O conjunto de edifícios novos, que veio substituir o antigo Hotel Estoril-Sol, procura um carácter cenográfico e, simultaneamente, a escala de Land-art através da relação proposta entre figura e fundo, uma vez entendido o conjunto como matriz escultórica, charneira entre o morro sobranceiro a Norte à Av. da Venezuela, o parque e o mar, conferindo protagonismo ao lugar, entendido aqui numa dimensão dialogante entre as componentes paisagísticas, arquitectónicas e urbanísticas.

Da cicatriz resultante da demolição do antigo Hotel e a diferença altimétrica de 30 metros entre o morro da Castelhana e a Avenida Marginal, opta-se por uma transição gradual entre a cota alta e o nível da Avenida Marginal, através de uma plataforma de embasamento do novo conjunto edificado. Abaixo do nível desta plataforma, localizam-se as áreas de estacionamento e respectivas acessibilidades, assim como áreas comerciais, beneficiando de acessibilidade independente realizada a partir do exterior. No interior deste corpo, existe ainda uma ligação pedonal contínua, que articula as áreas interiores e o logradouro, constituindo esta a espinha dorsal de todo o complexo, enquanto as entradas principais do complexo habitacional situam-se a Sul, junto à Av. Marginal.

Os volumes emergentes são implantados segundo uma regra que visa relações de porosidade entre a construção e o fundo verde do parque e do morro. Partindo duma regra de implantação de três corpos regulares com planta quadrada e idênticos, separados por distâncias semelhantes, paralelos à Avenida Marginal e em que o mais afastado a Poente é, apenas, virtual (sugerido por uma plataforma situada na extrema poente do logradouro), os volumes elevam-se em dois conjuntos rodados segundo as duas direcções topograficamente mais vincadas, sendo uma dada pela linha do vale da Castelhana e reforçada pelo talvegue da ribeira, e a outra dada pela linha de costa, que se repercute no desenvolvimento da Avenida Marginal.
